“I thought Gowanda Ambulance was not-for profit? Why am I getting a bill?”
Gowanda Ambulance does not seek to make a profit. However, advanced medical equipment, supplies, well-trained personnel, fuel, and other overhead are significant expenses that need to be met. Unlike Fire and Police services, Gowanda Ambulance receives no funding from any county or municipality for the services it provides. We must rely on fundraisers, donations, and even billing revenue to continue to operate.
“All I needed was a ride to the hospital. Why does an ambulance cost so much?”
Most of cost of an ambulance is the lifesaving medical care that our team bring right to your bedside. The additional mileage charge for transport is secondary to the medical services we offer.
“Why is the insurance company sending me a check? Can I keep it?”
As the ambulance service is not a “participating provider” with most insurance carriers, the health insurance company will not send payment directly to the ambulance service, but to the patient who is the beneficiary. However, this payment has been sent to the beneficiary as reimbursement for the ambulance bill, which remains the patient’s responsibility to pay. This check is payment for the ambulance services that you used. Keeping this payment is not only fraudulent, but also deprives a much needed community resource of funding!
